Trek Highlights

A visit to the Langtang Valley provides a trekker with the oppurtunity to explore villages, climb small peaks and visit glaciers at a comfortably low elevation. Populated mostly by the Tamang people, the region is famous for its narrow valley surrounded by mountains such as Naya Kangri and Dorje Lakpa. Spring time sees the blooming of the Rhododendrons and a vast array of red, white and blue wild flowers. Within the valleys, Yaks lazily graze near the houses of their owners.

Trek Itinerary


Drive to Dhunche which take about seven hours drive. Camp at Dhunche. The elevation of Dhunche is 2,040m.


The first half of today’s journey will be by the roadway as far as Bharkhu, from where a trail will lead to Syabru. You be will seeing a roadway on the flank, which is about 1 km away in a straight line but it will take more than one hour to reach there. Start climbing this flank, continue the ascent going around the ridge ahead of you and you will be on the mountain flank of the Trisuli river’s left bank. The course becomes a gentle descent from here. From this point you can see only the top part of Langtang Lirung in front of you. Soon you will be in Bharkhu village. From here, the path will leave the roadway and here onwards you will have serious ascend. You will soon be in Bharkhu. After Bharkhu, we will be having lunch on the way. . Cross a stream, ascend a little further, you will reach the end of the ridge called Nourdhara. You will have a clear view of Langtang II or Ghenge Liru ( 6571m) in front of you. From here, the path continues on the flank without many slopes. You will be trekking through a forest of cedars, pines and rhododendrons. Pass above the Barabal village with a Gompa, get to the end of the ridge will see the Syabru village on ridge. Descend the gentle path on the flank and you will be in Syabru (2230m). If you turn around, you will see the beautiful mountains of Ganesh Himal.


Descend from Syabru village, turn right, trek down through the terraced fields to go around the valley and you will come to a wooden bridge. Cross it to the opposite bank and climb a little distance. The path will then become level and in about one hour, you will reach Ucha danda. A steep descent starts from here all the way to near the bank of the Langtang Khola. Climb back up for about five minutes, continue climbing along the river and you will reach a Bamboo Lodge in the woods. Our lunch point. Keep trekking through the deep forest going up and down until you come to a suspension bridge. Cross it to the right bank of the Langtang Khola. The path soon becomes a steep ascent and diverts away from the river. When it starts traversing the flank, the branch path that comes via Sherpa Gaun joins from the left. The path continues to ascend, getting close again to the river. In about 30 minutes you will reach lama Hotel the campsite for tonight.


After Lama Hotel, you will climb through a dense forest. The ground is covered by moss. Trees have ferns and epiphytic orchids on them. It looks like a semitropical jungle. Every now and then you can see the glittering white Langtang Lirung. Continue a gentle ascent you will reach Gumnachok. The Langtang Khola is now a rapid stream. After steep ascent you will reach the wide meadow, Ghora Tabela (3010m) our lunch point. Leaving Ghora Tabela, start with a gentle ascent which follow for about 100m through the shrubbery. When you climb over the terrace you will see the rocky Yala Peak(5033m) further up the valley. Trees are not growing in this area. Trek through two hamlets, Thangsep and Chamke. You will soon come to the plateau where the village of Langtang (3307m) looks very close. Descend from the plateau, cross a stream we pass by the school building and you will be in Langtang village with prayer flags flying in the wind. There are mani wheels at the entrance of the village and a fine chorten and mendan in the square.


From the village, climb up the road with stone walls and you will come to a chorten of mani stones, ahead of which a mendan continues for some distance along the gentle ascending road. Looking a Goan chempo in front, pass the two villages, Mund and Singdum and you will see that the Langtang Khola gets closer all the time. The valley becomes more open U-shaped. Ponggen Dopku (5930m) becomes visible ahead of you and you will soon be passing Chaldhang. Cross the wooden bridge over the Lirung Glacier. Yansa Tsenji (6543m) stands high to your left. Climb up the rocky moraine ahead and you will reach Kyanjin Gompa (3840m) today’s camp.


In Kyanjin Gompa, There is an old gompa, after which the village was named, and a cheese factory. The campsite will be the grassy kharka surrounded by stone walls. If your physical condition and time allow, follow the ridge that stretches northeast from the gompa to the small peak ( 4200m) You will enjoy a view of the entire Langtang Lirung embracing the glacier. It takes two hours to climb leisurely to this peak and another hour to come down.


On this day we will head back using the same route we came in. Our lunch point will be at Lantang village. Today we will be walking 5 hour for maximum to reach our campsite Ghoratabela.


After breakfast, we will be walking on the same trial till Lama Hotel. Which is about 2 and half hours walk. We will be having lunch here. Then after we will be changing our previous route and will head towards Sherpa Goan. You will gently descend down along the Langtang river till you reach Rimichi village. Then the path on the flank continues further on after Rimichi and gradually starts ascending up through the forested area. The duration from lunch point to Sherpa Goan (2565m) our campsite will be 3 hours walk. As the name shows, it is a Sherpa village. It is small


Today we will be walking all the way down for about 3 and half hours to reach our lunch point and campsite SYABRUBASI. On the way, you will approach some small village like Bhanjyang gaon from where one can see the mountains of Ganesh Himal. Then after you will reach Khimjing village where prayer flag are flapping in the wind. This is also a village of the Tibetans. From here will be descending ascending down. Then Wangal and again continue descending till you cross the suspension bridge over the Bhote Kosi. After that you ascend up till you reach Syabrubensi. We can some excursion of hot spring near campsite. Today will be our last night or camp.
